Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS), also known as oral appliances or sleep apnea mouthguards, are an alternative to traditional CPAP machines for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These custom-made oral devices are worn during sleep to hold the lower jaw and tongue in a forward position, preventing airway blockage and supporting uninterrupted breathing.

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles at the back of your throat relax too much during sleep, causing your airway to narrow or collapse completely. This leads to repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night, often accompanied by loud snoring or gasping for air.

First, you will need a formal diagnosis of any sleep disorders from a sleep physician (usually through an at-home or in-clinic sleep study) before we can provide an oral appliance for sleep apnea. If you haven’t had one yet, we can guide you through the referral process.
For mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, oral appliance therapy provided by an experienced sleep apnea dentist is a safe, effective and more comfortable alternative to traditional CPAP machines. It’s an ideal sleep solution for patients who can’t tolerate CPAP machines or want a less bulky, quieter and more portable option.
Not at all. Each device is customised to your bite and jaw position, and most patients find it very comfortable after a short adjustment period.
Some private health funds may cover part of the cost of an oral appliance for sleep apnea, particularly if you have extras or major dental cover. We can help you check with your provider and process any claims on the spot.
