Swollen, bleeding gums. Pain when eating. Teeth that feel loose or seem to drift. Some people notice the warning signs of gum disease. But for others, periodontal disease sneaks up on them silently, without any noticeable symptoms. Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) refers to the inflammation and infection of the soft gum tissues and bones that support the teeth. The main cause of gum disease is the build-up of bacteria and plaque that irritate the gums.
There are two main stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease that only affects the surface layers of the gums and is reversible with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis affects the deeper layers of the gum tissues and the bone supporting the teeth, leading to periodontal pockets between the teeth and gums. Once gum disease reaches this advanced stage, it cannot be reversed or cured — but it can be stabilised and managed through ongoing periodontal treatments. Without treatment, periodontal disease can result in severe gum recession, jaw bone loss, loose teeth, and, eventually, tooth loss.

Yes, Dr Yi Chan is a Surrey Hills dentist with extensive experience in the prevention, treatment and management of gum disease. However, we may refer you to a periodontist for specialist treatment if required.
You may experience some discomfort during treatment, but rest assured, we take every step to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible. Local anaesthetic may be used to numb the mouth so you won't feel any pain, just pressure. Plus, our sedation options can help you relax while we care for your gums.
Regardless of the stage, gum disease treatments involve ongoing care at home and professional dental services with your dentist or dental hygienist. Mild gingivitis may be resolved in a couple of weeks with good oral hygiene and several professional deep cleaning appointments. Advanced periodontitis is a lifelong condition that must be managed with ongoing treatment.
The types of periodontal treatments you need will largely depend on the severity of your gum disease. Typically, treatment will begin with non-surgical procedures, such as Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) and scaling and root planing (also called root debridement). These deep cleaning procedures clear away harmful bacteria, remove plaque buildup above and below the gum line, clean the root surfaces and smooth out the tooth root. In some cases, antibiotics may be used to treat gum infections.
At our Surrey Hills practice, we offer nonsurgical treatments and preventative periodontal care. We may refer you to a periodontist or oral surgeon if you have severe or advanced periodontitis and require surgical treatments, such as flap surgery, pocket reduction surgery to treat gum pockets, soft tissue grafts, bone grafting or guided tissue regeneration.
If left untreated, advanced gum disease can lead to the irreversible destruction of the gum tissues and bone structures that support your teeth, resulting in jaw bone loss and tooth loss.
